How to protect your pets from fire hazards in their homes.
October is National Animal Safety and Protection month - a great time to get inspired with these great tips from electronic security company Protection 1 (Wichita, Kansas):
- Conceal wires. Pets have been known to chew through electrical wires - and damaged wires can cause fires. Take care to keep wires out of pets' reach whenever possible.
- Be careful with candles. Do not leave open flames unattended. Curious pets can knock over candles or disturb fireplaces.
- Plan ahead. Implement a home fire safety plan that includes pets. Be sure the plan accounts for pets confined to crates and cages.
- Identify the pet. Put the pet's license and other ID tags on its collar in case you become separated.
- Give pets an escape route. Consider installing a pet door so pets have a chance to escape if fire breaks out when they're home alone.
- Ground them. Keep pets on the ground floor when they're home alone so that they'll be easier to rescue.
- Use the neighbors. Give a key to a neighbor and make sure they know where pets are kept so they can relay the information to firefighters.
- Monitor. Since most pets can't dial 911, consider installing monitored smoke detectors so that the fire department can be dispatched automatically if a fire breaks out.
